Ammonites are an extinct group of aquatic invertebrate animals in the subclass Ammonoidea of the class Cephalopoda. These molluscs are more closely related to modern coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish) than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the Nautilus genus found in the Indo-Pacific region.

They are excellent index fossils, and it is often feasible to link the mineral composition in which they are found to precise geological time periods. Their fossil shells usually take the form of planispirals, although there were some helically-spiraled and non-spiraled forms (known as heteromorphs).

They appeared on earth for about 330 million years and died out by the end of the Cretaceous age. Fossil collectors collect the fossilized shells for the complex shell patterns and colors.
